Over My Shoulder

Browning World Climate Bulletin, Nov. 2016

November 8, 2016

It has been awhile since I sent you my favorite weather letter. The weather is getting weird in North America but is not looking all that bad in other parts of the world. Gold bugs will be made happy because:

Not all that golden gleam is ripe wheat! India is celebrating the best monsoon season in 3 years and it will have a surprisingly large impact on the nation’s entire economy and on global gold sales. 58% of the Indian population depend on agriculture as their main source of income and a good rainy season and crop has an enormous impact on consumer demand. Indians regularly include gold, especially gold jewelry, as a household expense, a saving for hard times. The time for maximum purchases is in the post-harvest wedding season, which begins soon. Indian experts are expecting as much as a 60% increase in gold sales compared to last year.

A quick summary for you:

Scientists are now calling for La Niña conditions through fall that should probably linger until February or March.
Many are calling this a Central Pacific La Niña which will have only weak effects on the Canada and US heating season. It should bring welcome rain Southern Asia, Australia and Brazil.
The Cold Atlantic Blob, which created last year’s warm winter and this year’s busier hurricane season, is returning.
In North America, expect a warmer overall winter, with severe, fast-moving storms and dry conditions in the fruit and vegetable growing areas of California and Florida.
A La Niña Modoki is good news for crops.

(For those of you more affected by the weather, subscription information is at the bottom of the final page of the PDF; and when you email Alex, tell him that I sent you.)
